One of my dreams is to incorporate Light Rail Transit (LRT) into my hometown, Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, Japan. LRT is a new generation type of tram and many cities in the world have introduced it as well as Portland, OR.
I think there are advantages to form LRT network in three subjects; Welfare, Environment and Economics. Needless to say, less gas emission of LRT is a big advantage for environment. Also, usually, the light rail has low floor facilities as for welfare, which enable elderly people and people in disability to offer a barrier-free environment. Not only that, LRT will generate a big economic effect to center of the city, which will lead to revitalize the area.
I realized the importance of LRT when my district of my hometown started changing several years ago. The district is located in suburban area and is used to be surrounded by farm lands. However, many of the farm lands have been replaced by the numbers of housings because people got a very attractive tool to live in a suburban area; a car. This phenomenon is called suburbanization or sprawl and is really harmful to our earth’s ecological system. Even though such a car-dependency cannot always be the problem, it is account for the most part of the problem.
It is not easy to stop this harmful phenomenon to people because cars have already been too attractive for people to stop driving. Therefore, I thought we need to invent a tool that is enough attractive to transcend car-dependency trend and I sought for it. As a result, one of the potential tools for it was LRT to me.
Although that tool is not always the best, I will promote it in my future as one of my dream.
